Dice 101 for dungeons and dragons and all TTRPGsPaid Sponsor: store.steampowered.com/app/72...
I am a statistician and i love this.
Pls, write paper on statistics in dnd. Like how is it possible that some dice are good some bad etc
@Ibeatganon4fun And a foolish statistician continues to insist that all outcomes are equally likely after rolling 100 20s in a row.
A superstitious statistician supplies solely superfluous systems...
@João Have you seen Wyrmwood’s High Variance Dice?
Well this is just silly. I mean honestly. Dice personalities. That’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard of. The very idea. ……………….. 🤫 👍🏻
I use dice simulators for my rolls (most games these days are over Discord anyway, and if your DM or another player demands proof just do a screenshot).I know I'm trash for not owning "real dice", but I've seen and heard how some of my other players OBSESS over their dice to the point where one of them shrieked "YOU TREACHEROUS LITTLE SLUT!" in the middle of a game after they rolled two nat 1's.
Frankly, I find that reaction appropriate and hilarious
you know, you almost had me with the "blorp", because it seemed like a reasonable, logical thing to say. But you really hooked me in with the super prodigy, it's the only real explanation.
Psycho-babble, voodoo, b.s.Do a buoyancy test. Create a saltwater solution so thick with salt that the die will float. Drop it in. When it settles on the surface, record the number. Dip it back in (making sure it spins at least a little before resurfacing) and record the next number. Do that about 20 times for each die and you'll have a modestly accurate read on how imbalanced that die is, and what range (low, medium or high) it's likely to roll on the table. Not perfect, but better than the horse puckey touted here.
And what of that dice never learned to swim??? That die will remember you tried to kill it
IT. IS. A. JOKE. This is clearly satire at every turn, and is a representation of how it _feels_ dice are. Oh and basically everyone knows the glass of water thing. That's why the video isn't about it. That'd be dumb.
or you could just use magic. .. . . . . .
This seems entirely factual and reasonable.
I have this one really heavy metal D20 that almost always rolls an 18 for some reason
Would you explain Will Wheaton, then? XD
Human influence. He's cursed.
At first I was skeptical, but after seeing a couple of charts and the word "science" pop up on the screen, I've become convinced. After all - I wouldn't want to be one of those horrible "anti-science" people who are against science D:.
I have never thought so deeply about a set of dice in my life up until this point. I’ve been rolling all my dice for 30 min now trying to figure out the “personality” of my dice
technically i could 3d print or cast dice. ps never tell that to your dm
Wait I've been watching this for a year and I wasn't subbed yet? Time to fix that!
whoa... samesies. Fixed.
I just use gambling rules, this also includes forcing consistently lucky or unlucky players to use house dice if it looks like they're fudging rolls.
one of the most famos "Best dice" is the "Golden Snitch" a dice used by tellesin jaffe in critical role campaign 1 it was so good that matt took it after the campain
This feels like some weird cult recruitment video.
Laura's die logic revealed!!! Thanks you so much now I understand why she has so many dice.
Most of the time I roll under 10 xD
Now I'm imagining a world where can predetermine fate or read the luck in a room with a dice rollLike Divination wizards but maybe more urban fantasy
Man, I spent 2 hours rolling dice once. I had new players who owned no dice of their own, so I decided to roll each one of my dice 250 times prior to the game and marked the results. This was only so I as the DM could determine the best die of the lot, with as close to equal chance to land on any number as I could get. I didn’t want to fuck over my players but I wanted to still get the tension ramping. The thing with dice, especially plastic, is that they can be unequally weighted just by having bubbles inside when getting manufactured. I really need to invest in some metal dice.It was my orange die. Bringing balance to the game in every roll. I love that die.But rolling dice for hours and tallying it is boring and kinda dumb. If you care, just Laura Bailey it and chuck dice that give you too many bad rolls.
This is actually fucking amazing. Like Jesus fucking Christ
First I thought he was serious 🤣
This is serious business; what are you laughing about?
What do you mean? this *is* serious.
I have a wonderful super prodigy. I mainly DM (because I love it) and I once introduced an NPC with it during a combat. He rolled five count 'em five natural 20s in a row. This dice is my golden boy and I only bring him out when I want my players to pay dearly or when when I need the heroic and well loved NPC to help them out of a tight jam.
i have not played DnD for that long but man this hits home in how i look at my dice XD
I had a couple of d20, the twins I called them. They were the embodiment of my reckless attack great axe. The never let me down, I miss them a lot.
That's a good idea. I should steal that.
Mate just buy loaded dice, so much easier
That's cheating. What we do is manipulate fate
If only this works for metal dice. XD
Laura Bailey: * furiously writing down notes *
Got it. Buy Blorps for fudging. Buy diamonds in the rough for important saves. Buy fresh dice for training. Buy shy dice but roll their lows out early. Buy Low and Slow for DMing. Buy traitors so they can't hurt you. Buy Super Prodigies because they roll high but only when you believe they roll average.waitThat's buying all of them.Sold.
This episode brought to you by Laura Bailey.
hope the next episode is called how to train your dungeons and dragons
Me: "Oh, He's talking about how some dice are physically off balance because of production and statistically roll differently...... Oh, Nevermind, This is satire."
Satire? You don't play enough. This is a MAN who finally isn't afraid to say the TRUTH!
All of my dice are traitors. Every. Single. One.
@abbsnn cose What?
rolling out your 1s pre-game is for cowards and cheats.
This has the same energy as Door Monster's vid "Bad Dice"
This is accurate and hilarious. Thank you.
I have some dice that like attack rolls, and some that like saves, so I remember which ones are more reliable for each type of roll.
❄🎄🔯🎁✨👼🎑😌❄🎁✨👼🎄 *God demonstrated His love to us by sending His Son Jesus Christ, who died and rose from the dead to Give us eternal life.**He also promised to heal your body.* *If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead* *He'll give you eternal life* *(look up and ask HIM)*
and why are you using the jewish symbol if youre christian?
Could you not spout Christmas stuff in June? I'm a Christian too but this is a bit overboard.
Sorry, I'm not into that whole "human sacrifice" thing. It's just creepy.
Zee: traitorDice: _we know when we're bought_
Zee: reliable slow and lowBeastie Boys: _that is the tempo_
Oh wow, this was more eye-opening than i th- Wait... is that a Butt jar
@Tim Woods Ahhhh, right, took me a while to see what u meant, but i got it. Thanks haha
Haha, no. It might look like it, but it's more of a fishtank/candy jar. Round on the edge and flat on the sides.
Umm, please explain? I'm a bit confused.
So when's lesson two?
Reminds of a game I played in a store once. My d20 keep rolling low all during the majority of the session. Finally failing for the last time, I left the table, and head towards the store counter. I ask the the employee for new d20. Having him the money, he hands me this beautiful pitch black dice, with copper painted numbers. Returning back to the table, I ended up rolling high all night. Best impulse dice I ever got.
This guy gets it
Brb gonna roll my dice
There's a certain degree of 'soul' to dice that digital dice simply don't have. I absolutely hate digital die rollers because of this - it's like trying to have a conversation with a chat bot. There's what you expect to be there on a surface level, but you can tell it's just hollow.
not apps though. dice apps really do feel hollow. and on a related note, the one Tarot app i have basically just spits my question back out at me. Hey my boomer dad is kind of getting swept up in political radicalization what should i do about that? inverted emporer, yes thanks i am aware of WHAT the problem was, i wanted a solution. how do you SOLVE abused authority? Every time, without fail, zero exceptions. I can't call it hollow. To do that reliably there has to be some kind of object-soul processing the query. But it's either dimwitted, or mocking me.
Now that I think about it, I guess it makes sense that a computerized dice would have a more logical personality.
Mmm, i dunno, I'd have to disagree. From electronic dice what i consistently see from them, or at least the one on roll20 haven't had enough time to study the fantasy grounds one, is it'll give the roll that makes the most sense. If your character's an idiot but has a reason to know this one random tidbit of info it will give you like an 19 on the roll. But if you were just rolling cuz lol i could get high, you'll get nothing but sub-5s. As such, since I'm more into good story that "winning" i actually prefer them. Of course, dice are usually pretty cooperative with me in general. if the only, and i emphasize only, reason you want something is "because it'll be fun and cool" they'll give it to you. Even if you're not even the one rolling.
This. So much this. I’m glad I’m not the only one
roflmao or you can deal with a traitor die by putting it in a ceramic bowl with some alcohol and lighting it on fire while your other dice watch early in a game... heard a story once where someone did that and rolled above average the rest of the night.
or worse yet, taking a page from Darths & Droids and prepping a small number of dice by rolling them until they rolled 1's twice in a row and then saving them, to reduce the risk of another 1 when you go to roll something important.
Don’t forget “the comedians”, these dices don’t care about you or probability they will just consistently roll whatever’s funnier in each situation. You’ll get low rolls when trying to kill one kenku armed with a fly swatter and then a nat 20 when trying to seduce that kenku into sparing your life.
Laura Bailey where you at, lol?
This still can't explain the wheaton curse
That's a curse on the person not the dice.
Do I honestly believe this? No.Am I still going to do this stuff because it’s fun?Hell yes!
Once the music crept in I knew I was about to hear the ramblings of an insane person.
Zee Bashew... now I know you are one of us. You understand the subtle magic of the d20. My personal rules once I establish my best set of four are as follows: Never pre-roll your dice. Never talk about the rolls you're about to make. Never brag about high rolls. Never speculate the outcome, and never talk about the potential consequences of a bad roll. And always make sure to expose your dice to Dorito dust, pizza grease, or other byproducts of delicious essential gamer snacks. Your babies gotta eat too. This is the way.
My Gemini Green Purple/Golds are none of these personalities. They roll whatever the heck they feel like but I love that sort of chaotic feel cuz it gives my players and DMs a surprise no matter what. No joke first two rolls I ever got with this set was a Nat 20 and a Nat 1. Perfectly encapsulates the personality.
Had a dice ad lol for spherical dice 😂
RIP Jaffe’s Golden Snitch
i found an orphan die rolled 5 20s in a roll bought it never rolled higher then a 5 on it in 50 rolls after. it just wanted to be adopted. it also broke the staff off my wizard figure
i can't wait for the dice training video.
It's time to grab your dice and set your ovens. 😈🤑
Wait is this a shitpost or something that d&d players actually do? Cause this is fantastic, I love it xD
Laura Bailey be watching this religiously
So much yes in this video, lmao
TTRPG's will turn anyone's paranoia and superstition up to 11.This video documents it beautifully.
This is absolutely amazing.
Hi! I have a question: is there a way to test your dice after already buying them? I started collecting dice a while back, but now I’ve rolled them so much without really paying attention to them I only have a vague idea of what there personality might be.
You can test the balance of the die, to detect cheating dice's (not detect a die's "personality"). Depending on the dice material (works on some plastic, but obviously not on metal die) you can take a glass of water & keep adding salt to the water until the dice is suspended in the middle of the liquid, then poke it with something, if the die keeps turning around and stops on different numbers then it is a fair dice, but if a specific side consistently turns up when it stops, then it's a unbalanced or weighted die.
Waterboard your dice in a glass of saltwater to keep them afraid of you.
Nah, you gotta keep em on edge. Buy them right off the bat, and they'll sit around on your couch smoking weed all day, because they have no fear in em.
What I got from this:If you're checking out dice, give it a couple of test rolls. if it lands on a number, BUY IMMEDIATELY!
I can't tell if this is serious or comedic. I still love it, either way.
My D20 is interesting. It will either roll high or really low.
Dude over here lookin like a cross between a gnome and a dwarf 😂😂😂
hahaha now as a dice Troll, I know how to separate my pretties
So what do you do if all dice and digital rollers always roll low except when you do a perception check on an empty room
Unless you’re Will Wheaton, then you’re just cursing any and all dice.
Normally my dice love me and I roll pretty high for all my characters however one character just seems to be hated by them. It was unfortunately the character I played the longest too. They never seem to roll above a 10, just plain hitting the enemy was rare. Then one time a friend played my character for me and got two 20 in the session. The next character was back to being lucky.
are you the bug in Laura Baileys ear?
I was about to ask if he was secretly Laura's mentor!
I really hope dice training is a real video coming up and not a throwaway joke because it sounds fucking hilarious.
When you play a lot on discord with Avrae and your life is at the mercy of the bot.
I noticed you conveniently left out the cursed die so it doesn't spread to your own
I breed traitors, except they never rolled a 20
This guy gets it...
This is beautiful
Gods i do/did this....
Descriptions are overrated, right?
Literally had a game this thursday with one player who rolled around 20 times, and only got 3-8, while I on average rolled a 17, lowest I rolled that game was a 11. Technically rolled below that, but I had advantage every time. It's not a coincidence, Praise RNGesus.
I personally have a diamond in the rough. It's a scratched to shit purple dice with two of the numbers scratched off and it looks like trash.I've never seen this dice roll below an 18 in over five years of play. I love this dice so very much.
btw, tags apply to how the video is reccomended more if there's three of them at the end of the description (i think)
This is truth.
Or you're like me: a singularity of bad luck so powerful that it overwrites the personality of the die while I'm rolling it, rolling low 80-90% of the time.
@Poison Mantis As the GM for those games, who has dice BANNED from being used by me for rolling five 20s in a row, I can say that no he is not.
are you will wheaton?
I can't help but notice he recommends buying ALL of them.
Not the traitor.
yeah i think he might just like dice lol
"This die rolls awesome!" is the "I am SUCH a Scorpio!" of TTRPGs.
Forgot dramatic dice. The die that is mediocre unless critical moments, in which it'll always be a twenty or a one, depending on which would be the most devastating or uplifting.
What is a die? A miserable little pile of secrets! But enough talk.. have at you!
I love this comment so much
My first d20 is a shy die, and I appreciate them for that
I have an absolutely hideous "diamond in the rough". It's light purple with ugly grey veins, but consistently rolls high.
so...what do I do if my d20 starts speaking in tongues?
Buy it immediately.
Make a pact with it! Screw your soul if it means you character becomes a god!
You forgot the Clutch Dice. These are die that roll low-to-average most of the time, but when you _really need it_, they'll come through with those high numbers and critical hits. They're perfect for people who want really cinematic and exciting games.
what if you are using software to roll...
HERETIC, be gone thou fiend of the virtual realm!
My friends call digital dice "Virtual Satan" because it never works out for them. I've always used one out of convenience, and I regularly get great rolls. I have decided that using software to roll depends on one's loyalty to the software; if you have completely sold your soul to Virtual Satan, you will be rewarded, but if you only turn to it when you forgot your "real" dice, you will be punished.
Most of the dice I have are mediocre. Usually they don't ever roll high or low. The only one I have that I like is a little red D6 that rolls high but never 6.
