The W124 Mercedes 500E was the world's most perfect sedan | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 05

There are a lot of misconceptions about the Porsche-built W124 Mercedes 500E, and Jason explains why the 500E and E500 was NOT a Porsche sports sedan with a Mercedes badge. First off, there's not a single Porsche part on the car.

Porsche Engineering Services helped with reengineering the W124's engine compartment to fit in the 32-valve, 4-cam M119 V-8 - for both the 400E and the 500E.

But the 500E doesn't use the same V-8 as the 500SL. It needed shorter connecting rods so that it fit in the same physical space as the 4.2-liter 400E - this way only one structural variant needed to be produced.

The 400E was a response to the Lexus LS400. Why do you think it wasn't called a 420E?

Porsche also did the engineering to bolt up wheels, tires, brakes, and suspension components from the wider and heavier R129 500SL and W124 500SEL. That necessitated fender flares so wide that the 500E didn't fit down the regular W124 production line in Sindelfingen.

For both models, Porsche performed the physical modifications to Mercedes-built W124 chassis, and sent them back to Sindelfingen for paint. The 400E remained there, but because of its width, the 500E was sent back to Porsche, which assembled the 500E at a second Zuffenhausen factory.

With Bruno Sacco's revolutionary looks, aerodynamics, obsession with safety, and Mercedes build quality and engineering might, the W124 was certainly among the best (and most expensive) sedans in the world.

Still is. It's close to perfect. But it's not a Porsche Sports Sedan.

Owning two W124's.....Mercedes stop supporting OE parts a few yrs ago. Actually, they provided parts a lot longer than they had to. So now, what's still in the pipeline is it. Aftermarket parts, if you care anything about your car and safety, are usually dismal. Whether or not that situation will improve is anyone's guess. I can easily envision a time when I would have to abandon the 124 and get something else due to the parts issue. And don't confuse OEM with OE. Original manufacturers don't have to make the parts as originally sanctioned/certified by's an honor system and entirely up to the manufacturer. I'm finding more often than not the honor system isn't working. A very sad commentary about a great series of cars.

I've nevver stopped driving these cars for more than 30 years. I own a 260E with 350,000 km, a 320TE with 300,000 km and a 500SE (W126) with 430,000 km and no other car neither electric nor with combustion engine. I'm driving them daily, they have never let me down, are getting better every year and will never go away until I go. period.

And theCars are Youngtimers for 5000-40.000 Euros! The 500E was a special W124 and your Videoclip show this! But i like the 200D with 72 PS! Just to come back on something you said: the W201 and the W124 had relatively short car bodies as was customary with European cars but, with a wheelbase of respectively 105 and 110 inches, they were considered as a compact sedan and a midsize sedan.

Has this been filmed in the US or in Germany? Just asking out of curiosity because the 500E has a – albeit expired – registration from my German hometown of Remscheid (hence the RS) which is located approx. 25 miles northeast from Cologne (Köln) where the 190E had been registered (K for Köln). The letters TS on the 500E numberplate even suggest that it might possibly have been previously owned by Tim Schrick, a German race car driver and TV presenter and son of the founder of the Remscheid based motor engineering and developping company AVL Schrick.

The 500E was far from perfect. The ones in Japan regularly overheat because of insufficient cooling, and with such a big engine over the front axle, it’s handling could hardly be called sporty with the ASR kicking in frequently.

'The world's most perfect sedan'? So, it was reasonably economic to fuel? Maintain? Reliable? I think the Mercedes 'lesser' models were much more practical. If it was merely performance, then just say that...

Had a E250 TDT for many years, was the best car I ever had. Tons of space (it would fit the complete arc of Noah plus a 900 sqft apartment), extreme comfort, luxury and reliability. Unfortunately the gear box and engine got ruined by some idiot mechanics in Croatia. Had to let go of it, but if that car would still be produced today.................I would buy it in an instance. Loved that car and also miss it. Nothing can top that car.

Sadly from 2030 on all combustion cars including classics will be banned
from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the
Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025
on by reducing all petrol stations to only one state operated central gas
station per city or county. From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be
banned exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine
and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027
on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any
longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime.
